VALUES EDUCATION AT FLITWICK LOWER SCHOOL
Values are the things we believe lead our decisions on how to behave. They are the principles that guide our lives and the choices we make. Some commonly held values include respect, friendship, courage, trust, tolerance and thoughtfulness....

BRITISH VALUES

At Flitwick Lower, we actively promote British Values, as defined under the Ofsted guidance 2014, through our school vision, ethos, agreed rules, curriculum and teaching:

Tolerance of those with different faiths

DEMOCRACY

We have School Ambassadors with member from Yr 2 up to Year 4. The Ambassadors meet regularly with Mrs New and Mrs Palmer.. The aim of the meetings and tasks completed is to seek the children vies and opinions on a range of school issues, they work with their classes to instigate change and improve the learning environment.
By valuing each ‘voice’ and by listening and responding to those voices we demonstrate that we support democracy and liberty.

THE RULE OF LAW

Children are taught from an early age the rules and expectations of the school. They are taught the value and reasons behind our school charter, the responsibilities that are involved and the consequences that occur when they are not adhered to. Each class agrees it own set of ‘expectations’ at the beginning of the academic year and these are the starting point for any disagreements or discussions. As a school we follow the Restorative Justice approach to try and solve disputes between pupils, adults and the community.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

Through our Values Education we ensure that all children understand how to become a good and value member of the school and society as a whole. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for the children to make informed choices through a safe and engaging learning environment. They are actively encouraged to make informed choices in their learning to develop as individuals and understand what type of learner they are. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and how to do this is a safe and secure way, for example through our Home School Agreement and Acceptable User Policies.

MUTAL RESPECT AND TOLERACNE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS

As a Value based school mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.

Flitwick Lower is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse; therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE, PSHE and contextual teaching reinforce this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.

At Flitwick Lower, we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
